Step 1: Update to the latest version. With the latest update I found the phone to get warm less frequently. You can read about the update here
Step 2: Change the default launcher to third party launcher. I have found this step to work surprisingly well reducing the chances of phone overheating. You can learn how to do that here.
Step 3: Turn off animations Those beautiful animations can cause heating sometimes and you can easily turn it off. It will even speed up your UI.

Step 4: Turn off GPS/Location feature As you know GPS is used for navigation in Google Maps etc but this is found to be one reason for heating of the phone and it is recommended to turn it off when not in use.
Step 5: Deny permissions for apps to run in the background and auto restart. Most users will have multiple apps installed but such apps will be running in the background even if you are not using it.

Step 6: Update HyperOS system apps. Make sure you update system apps by going to settings and using System Apps Updater option.
Step 7: Schedule auto turn off.
You can schedule your phone to turn off once everyday when you are
sleeping so that all the phone will get refreshed removing all the apps
in memory and reducing the chance of overheating.
Step 8: Reduce Refresh Rate Reducing the refresh rate will reduce the chances of overheating and phone needs to work more harder to keep up with high refresh rate. You can use it as a last resort if none of the other options work as this will affect how smooth you feel the phone is.
Step 9: Switch to 4G in secondary SIM. If you are using 5G for primary data sim then you can switch the secondary SIM to 4G which can reduce overall heat consumption as calls are still through 4G
Step 10: Track background apps: Install a battery saver like AccuBattery and it will show you apps which takes up maximum battery use and usually that will be the one that causes heating also.
Step 11: Reset the phone: If all else fails try resetting the phone using factory reset which will make your phone operating system as brand new.
Step 12: Disable Google app: Google app which includes assistant and Google Discover is an app that continuously runs in the background and uses battery. Luckily HyperOS allows you to disable it.
